ABOUT half of Barnsley’s major construction sites which closed in response to lockdown measures have gone back to work.

Officers at the council have been performing inspections across the borough to assist in making sure work can be carried out safely.

Social distancing measures are in place at all sites, including the major Glass Works project in the town centre.

Coun Tim Cheetham, Barnsley Council’s cabinet spokesman for place, said: “Keeping people safe will always be the number one priority.

“However where it is safe to do so, helping make sure people can do their jobs and that our economy is supported is also a hugely important priority.

“We all have a role to play in protecting each other from the virus.”
