CONSULTATIONS regarding major changes to hyper acute stroke services, and children’s surgeries and anaesthesia services got underway this week.

Hyper acute stroke units - which provide the first 72 hours of critical care - have been reviewed across South Yorkshire. Under the new proposals, the units Barnsley and Rotherham hospitals would be closed and anyone who suffers a stroke would be taken to either Doncaster, Sheffield or Chesterfield for the first 72 hours of care, or until medically stable.

After that time, if well enough, they would be brought back to Barnsley for the remainder of the care.

The shake up of children surgeries will also see some children also sent out of town for certain treatments.

If children in Barnsley need an operation under general anaesthetic for certain types of surgery either at night, weekend or require an overnight stay - they will be sent to another hospital.
