A CONTROVERSIAL councillor has quit after resigning from the Labour Party.

Phil Davies, who represented the Old Town ward since 2012, removed himself from the party amidst claims that complaints he made over allegations of bullying within the Labour-run council had been ignored.

His term was due to come to end in May and he planned to continue in his role as an independent councillor but has now stepped down.

His decision to leave follows comments he made last week that he had resigned from the Labour Party due to ‘getting nowhere’ on bullying claims raised with senior management and the council leader, Coun Sir Steve Houghton, on behalf of constituents and council employees.

Coun Houghton told the Chronicle that Coun Davies had not been able to substantiate his allegations and no further action was taken.
