A CONTROVERSIAL shop which sells so-called 'legal highs' has moved out of Barnsley Town Centre in a move which has pleased nearby businesses.

Smokey Sam's has moved from the Arcade and is opening in the former fancy dress shop on Sheffield Road.

The products sold at the shop are marked as herbal incense and 'not for consumption', but people instead smoke them.

Businesses in and around the Arcade have complained for months about antisocial behaviour of people smoking the products in Mandela Gardens. Dozens of ambulances have been called to the area to deal with people who have become unwell after consuming them.

PC Leanne Reis said the move would improve the situation in the town centre and Mandela gardens, but that officers would be keeping a close eye on whether the problems moved to the Sheffield Road area.

"People will still go home and use the products there. Our concern is that they start using the underpass near the Alhambra, so we'll be doing some proactive work to prevent that becoming an issue."

Steve Shannon from Smokey Sam's refused to comment.
