NOT a single penny has been clawed back by the council for cleaning up illegal traveller and gypsy camps in the last five years.

Figures obtained by the Chronicle show the taxpayer footed a bill topping more than £16,000 to clear the mess left behind in the wake of unauthorised encampments.

Some of the residue that's had to be cleaned up includes nappies, bottles, cans, food wrappers, bags of rubbish, metal, abandoned gas cylinders - even human waste.

The problem has prompted complaints across the borough, particularly from residents living in hot spot areas for unauthorised camps such as Darfield, Wombwell, Jump, Kingstone, Stairfoot and Cundy Cross.
