THE council has vowed to clamp down on Barnsley's litterbugs and is warning offenders will be punished with heavy fines.

Coun Charlie Wraith branded litter-dropping residents as 'cretins' and Coun Joe Hayward asked for offenders to be named and shamed.

"Enough is enough," Coun Hayward added. "We should not accept litter in Barnsley and there should be a zero tolerance approach. It is time for them to be named and shamed."

Coun Wraith visited Littleworth Park near Monk Bretton and said there was an 'indescribable' amount of litter strewn across the area.

He said: "There was easily two wagon loads of rubbish. We are looking at addresses of alleged offenders and hopefully there will be successful prosecutions."
