A PLANNING application for a new gyratory traffic system which will see a huge slice of a popular park destroyed has been provisionally approved by Barnsley Council’s planning regulatory board this afternoon - although it may still have to be approved by a government minister.
The plan for the Dodworth Road junction involves creating a new road bypassing a section of Pogmoor Road - cutting through the park. It will mean a stop to vehicles from the motorway turning right onto Broadway, with motorists having to go around the gyratory and back up Dodworth Road.
Prior to the application being considered by the council, a request was made to the Secretary of State, James Brokenshire, to ask him to ‘call in’ the application meaning he would become the decision maker.
In light of this request, a spokesman said the council had agreed not to issue the decision pending confirmation from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government as to whether or not the Secretary of State has decided to call in the application.
“There are no firm timescales for this decision and a further statement will be issued once the council has clarity,” the spokesman said.
