BARNSLEY Council is considering asking the government to increase the number of asylum seeker dispersal areas in Yorkshire so 'everyone takes their share', the Chronicle has learned.

Barnsley is one of ten dispersal local authorities in Yorkshire and the Humber under a contract agreed with government.

It means asylum seekers are housed and supported in the borough through the Home Office's dispersal system while their claims are processed.

Head of community and enforcement at Barnsley Council, Paul Brannan, said the council may consider making a request for dispersal areas in the region to be widened.
