FIVE people who dropped litter in Barnsley town centre have been fined £225 - then named and shamed by the council.

The litter louts all failed to pay the fixed penalty notice and were prosecuted in their absence by Barnsley magistrates.

The fixed penalty notices were originally issued in May by 3GS, the private company brought in by Barnsley Council to take action against people dropping litter.

The five are: Rhys Atkinson, 22, Mansfield Road, Athersley, who dropped litter in Shambles Street;Janine Ellis, 43, of Darton Street, Darton and David Hewitt, 37, of Tune Street, who both dropped litter near Barnsley Interchange; Aleksandrs Lukjanovs, 30, Langdale Court Barnsley, and Laura Snitkus , 25, Langdale Court, Barnsley, both littered Eldon Street.

Each now has to pay a fine, and all have to pay prosecution costs back to the council as well as a victim surcharge, totalling fines of £224.94 each.
