APPROVAL for almost £800,000 to be invested to provide more secondary school places has been given by Barnsley Council’s ruling cabinet members.

Darton Academy, on School Street, is set to be re-modelled - costing £642,477 - while £150,000 will be given to Outwood Academy in Carlton to provide a mobile classroom.

The proposals were discussed at the town hall on Wednesday, where members praised the schools’ willingness to provide ‘essential’ extra spaces.

Coun Sarah Tattershall said: “Pupils are in need of places and this scheme will provide those.

“There’s a big demand over the next two years and it’s essential that this work is carried out.”

Current projections indicate a rising demand in school places in the central planning area, with an additional 83 places needed in September 2019 and 60 more in 2020.
