Barnsley Council will install signs in Penistone market in an attempt to stop people leaving food and attracting pigeons.

Business owners and shoppers have complained about an abundance of birds in the area, which have settled on nearby buildings after being attracted by scraps of food left in the market barn.

Residents have also reported people scattering grain in the area to feed the pigeons, which has worsened the problem.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesman for environment, said: "We will shortly be placing notices in and around the market asking people to refrain from leaving any type of food on the ground.

"Scattering food on the ground is classed as littering so we will be monitoring the area, working with colleagues in regulatory services."
