BARNSLEY Council officers have been praised for removing tonnes of fly-tipping from Shafton.

Baths, toilets, sofas, cabinets, mattresses, drawers, kids’ toys, tyres and bags of rubbish have been strewn across a dead-end road in Shafton, off the A628 roundabout, for more than a year but it was removed at the end of last month after calls from the public.

Shafton Parish Council discussed the matter at last week’s monthly meeting and revealed a gate could be installed in the future to protect the hotspot from would-be tippers.

“It’s an excellent result and it’s great that it’s been removed,” chairman Dave North said. “I think it’s in both ours and Barnsley Council’s interests to keep this area litter-free in the future so we must look at preventing further instances.”
