BARNSLEY Council is reviewing the need for emergency and supported accommodation for the borough’s homeless following renewed calls for a permanent overnight shelter for rough sleepers.

There is already a permanent hostel in the town - Holden House on Race Street - which has been in operation for more than a decade but there is no emergency overnight accommodation for single people.

At present Barnsley Council can only offer such accommodation, based on local availability, on the day. If this is not available, an out-of-area placement may be offered - often at a hostel in Sheffield or Huddersfield.
