TRADERS and shoppers are delighted with the new May Day market in Barnsley town centre and looking forward to a busy and festive Christmas, according to the council.

This week a Christmas market arrived in town centre streets and will remain all weekend.

At the same time Christmas trees were placed in the May Day market where stall holders are looking forward to their first Christmas in their new temporary home.

Traders who moved from the semi-open market in the Metropolitan Centre into the new market have reported more shoppers and increased sales.

A spokesman for the council’s markets team said: “We have had reports of a much increased footfall-more shoppers are visiting the market and that’s great news for the stall holders and the atmosphere.”
