BARNSLEY Council has served notice on the owner of a former bike shop believed to have been converted into a dozen bed sits or more without permission.

Building work finished on the former George Ward motorbike shop on Old Doncaster Road about six months ago and locals were told by contractors the upper floors had been turned into as many 14 bed sits.

Barnsley Council confirmed it never received a planning application for the property and as a consequence bins were never provided for tenants - who began to move in three months ago - so rubbish has been piling up outside.

It has now served a planning contravention notice which requires the owner to reveal precise details about the building’s use.
