BARNSLEY Council prevented more than 100 cases of homelessness in three months, according to a report.

The council’s quarter two performance report says the number of cases where homelessness was prevented between July and September was 145.

This was achieved by providing advice and information to householders and helping them to avoid homelessness by, for example, negotiating with mortgage providers and landlords.

The report states: “This is very encouraging as the homelessness application process is long, complex and disruptive for the household as it often involves a move to a temporary accommodation before moving again to settled accommodation.

“Our continued focus on homelessness prevention and early engagement has ensured that we have maintained relatively low levels of statutory homelessness applications.”

However, between July and September, four cases were confirmed as homeless after ‘every attempt to prevent it had failed.’
