PLANS to spend up to £19,000 to pay an undergraduate on a local authority work experience placement at the same time Barnsley Council has been making low paid workers redundant have been thrown out by councillors.

They accused the council’s human resources department of being too generous in assessing the role at ‘grade two’, which would mean salary, National Insurance and pension contributions of up to £19,400.

Leeds University had been keen to supply a student for the placement but the plan has been scrapped after councillors questioned the cost and whether it was appropriate when regular workers were at risk of redundancy in September.
