BARNSLEY Council will be given the chance to buy Wentworth Castle Gardens for £1, the Chronicle can reveal.

Options are being explored to secure a future for the failed Stainborough tourist attraction which closed to the public last month due to a funding crisis, with the trust responsible for managing the historic parkland no longer able to meet its running costs.

The Chronicle has learned that council bosses will be asked next month whether they want to take advantage of a ‘pre-emption agreement’ in place for the site - a legal right that allows a prospective buyer to be the first in line to buy land up for sale before it is offered to anyone else.

This agreement has been included within a council document containing all major decisions the ruling cabinet is expected to consider and determine in the coming months.
