ALMOST 800 Barnsley Council workers benefit from subsidised car parking under a deal which costs more than £300,000 a year in ‘lost’ income, it has emerged.

Despite that, senior councillors still insist the authority has a “commitment to encouraging less car travel” although its policy has been criticised by a charity which promotes sustainable transport.

Figures obtained by the Chronicle reveal that 775 staff members enjoy subsidised parking as part of their employment package, paying the reduced fee through a ‘salary sacrifice’ arrangement.

It means the income generated for the council was around £160,000 from those workers, compared to £496,000 if they had bought the passes as season tickets which are available to the public.
