A COUNCILLOR says the parks in her ward have become so neglected, she had to cut the grass herself just so her children could play football.

Monk Bretton councillor Victoria Felton took her sons to a park by Burton Grange Community Centre, Lundwood - but when she saw the grass looked like a ‘dog’s dinner’, Coun Felton took it upon herself to deal with the issue herself after her complaints to the council fell on deaf ears.

“My lads were trying to play, but if the grass is too long the football doesn’t move,” said Coun Felton, herself a footballer for Worsbrough Ladies.

“It was about a foot long, and it’s been like that for weeks. So I went down with my lawnmower and did a full football pitch, it probably took me two hours - but it wouldn’t take the neighbourhood services team that long.

“They can train me up on the machines, I don’t mind.

“I know they’re struggling but they can’t let the community go to waste like that.”

Coun Felton added she had already, and would continue, to campaign to make sure parks in her ward were maintained.

Coun Chris Lamb, cabinet spokesperson for environment and transport, said after a review the neighbourhood services team has revised its target grass-cutting schedule from 25 working days to 21 working days.

Coun Lamb added the council welcomes feedback to help it deliver the service as required.
