PENISTONE West Councillor Joe Unsworth has announced he will stand down from his position at the local authority elections in May.

However, he intends to continue with his second role on Penistone Town Council.

His decision will bring to an end his second spell as a member of Barnsley Council, having first served from 1995 to 2003.

Announcing the decision, he said: "I did eight years from 1995 to 2003 and that was a time when the council had resources and could think about improving services.

"It was quite a shock to be back on the council and see the change.

"It has lost 50 per cent of its workforce, £80m in savings and there is more to come.

"When issues are raised by residents, it can be very difficult, you have to say 'very sorry, there is nothing we can do'."

By the elections in May, Coun Unsworth will be aged 75 and he cited that as one of the reasons for deciding to stand down.
