FOUR Barnsley councillors have announced they will retire at the May local elections.Ê

Coun Lesley Duerden elected to Darton East in 2012, Coun Jen Worton, Dearne North in 2008, Coun Sharron Brook, Dearne South in 2003 and Coun Margaret Morgan, Wombwell South in 1996 and then Wombwell post-boundary change in 2004, are all stepping down.Ê

Tributes to the four were made at yesterday's meeting of the full council.

Council leader Sir Steve Houghton said: "I do want to say a very big thank you to Coun Duerden for her hard work in Barnsley, Darton and for the future.Ê

"Coun Worton is always measured and thoughtful in everything she does. I wish her a long and happy retirement.Ê

"Coun Brook was Dearne through and through, very popular and always available to help her community. Following the loss of her husband we understand her recent decision to step down and her presence, knowledge and sense of humour will be missed by everyone.Ê

"Coun Margaret Morgan was chairman of governors at King's Oak Primary Learning Centre and then the Ellis school and as an ex-head, her first love was always young people and the education of young people.”
