Darfield councillors are claiming a major victory after Stagecoach agreed to return some of its routes between the village and Wombwell.

The route of the number 26 Barnsley-Wombwell will be amended on October 26 to once again serve Illsley Road, Morrison Road, Bly Road, Roundwood Way and Upperwood Road, which lost their direct link with Wombwell in July with the scrapping of the hourly 27 service.

At the time, Stagecoach heralded the changes as the greatest in a decade and based on customer feedback.

However, Darfield residents and Wombwell shopkeepers soon complained, arguing the changes made it easier for villagers to travel to Barnsley and Goldthorpe at the expense of the traditional link with Wombwell.

However, following a meeting with Couns Brian Key and Pauline Markham, the company agreed to compromise.

Stagecoach Yorkshire's commercial director, Rupert Cox, said: "Customer service is something that we take very seriously at Stagecoach and feedback from passengers is regularly used to shape our networks.

"After taking on board comments from members of the public and discussing the options with local councillors, we're really pleased to be introducing this route change."

Coun Markham said she wanted to praise Stagecoach for their co-operation. She said: "We saw something had to be done and Stagecoach didn't have to listen to us, because they're a business, but they did. I would just say to people, make sure you use the service, or you'll lose it."
