HOUSEHOLDERS paying rogue traders to get rid of their waste goods which end up as fly tipping could save money if they paid the council to dispose of it properly, a councillor has said.

Fly tipping costs Barnsley Council £250,000 a year and the issue was the subject of a publicity stunt on Wednesday when a truck full of waste was dumped on Barnsley Pals Square at the side of the town hall.

It included two matching settees which Coun Jenny Platts said Barnsley Council would have collected for £20 through its large unwanted items service, if the resident had called them rather than using an unlicensed firm.

“You can pay £10 for one item or £20 for up to three items and we’ll come and collect them,” said Coun Platts. “That’s £20 for a suite and I know these companies are charging far more than that to dump it where they like.”
