A COUPLE breathed a sigh of relief after a nightmare neighbour was jailed for waging a campaign of abuse against them.

Joanne Brown and Lois Pearson were targeted by Sarah Youel, 27, because of their sexuality.

Youel would hurl abuse at the couple, who have lived at their Strafford Walk home in Dodworth for nine years in July, making their lives a misery for months.

Joanne said problems with Youel, who seemed intent on causing the couple as much trouble as possible, started last April.

She listed a catalogue of incidents spread over a period of about five months and said Youel spouted abuse at her and Lois, calling them degrading names such as 'whore' 'lezzas' 'weirdos' 'fat' and 'grotesque'.

She said Youel would stand in her back garden banging a bin or metal sheet with a hammer for up to an hour at a time, smashing bottles and intimidating friends and family who visited.

By November Joanne and Lois, along with five other neighbours, were sick of Youel's behaviour and decided to go to the police.

The case went to court last Thursday and Youel was convicted of harassment and jailed for 18 weeks.
