WORK to carve up and develop the Courthouse car park for housing could begin in as little as two years, a Barnsley Council boss has said.

David Shepherd, who heads economic regeneration for the council, revealed initial ideas and time scales to transform the town centre car park during a town centre business forum.

He said the council is looking to replicate the success of dense urban housing seen in others areas, such as the Little Kelham scheme in Sheffield which is a mix of commercial and residential properties nestled together.

Earlier this year the Chronicle reported how the car park, which is split across two levels, is being marketed as a chance to create high-quality town centre homes in a push towards more town centre living - with space for about 150 homes and possibly more in the future.
