Barnsley’s unbeaten start to the season ended with a 1-0 loss at Coventry City on Saturday.

The hosts netted the winner in the 80th minute to continue the Reds’ record of not winning an away game against the Sky Blues in 25 games across 95 years since 1923.

Jacob Brown, on his first league start, had three excellent chances to open his career account in senior football at 0-0 in a decent game in which most sides missed several opportunities and had spells of pressure.

The Reds are still third in the table after Sunderland, Walsall and Peterborough also lost but they are now five points adrift of leaders Portsmouth.

Head coach Daniel Stendel made three changes from the side that drew with Walsall a week earlier. Brown made his first league start in place of George Moncur while Kenny Dougall and Adam Davies returned from international duty to replace Jack Walton and Cameron McGeehan. Brown played on the right wing with Mamadou Thiam on the left and Mike Bahre up front with Kieffer Moore.

Conor Chaplin, who signed for Coventry from Portsmouth after Barnsley attempted to recruit him this summer, should have opened the scoring in the seventh minute but fired wide after being put clean through on goal in yards of space.

Brown had a similar opportunity after his namesake Junior Brown accidentally played him in one-on-one with Sky Blues goalkeeper Lee Burge who brilliantly turned the effort onto the left post. Brown had another superb chance to score his first career goal a few minutes later when a fine Reds move down the left wing ended with Thiam pulling the ball back from him but he fired wide of the bottom left corner wide ten yards out.

Kieffer Moore and Dimitri Cavare both blasted over from long-range then Brown shot straight at Burge from 25 yards. Coventry’s Jordan Shipley fired off target from outside the box as the first half fizzled out after a good start.

Burge made another good save early in the second half, tipping over an effort by Thiam from the left of the box before Moore headed a Cavare cross wide.

Chaplin thought he had put the hosts ahead in the 53rd minute but the linesman’s flag was up for offside as he fired in following good work by Jonson Clarke-Harris and Tom Bayliss following a slip by Dougall deep in his own half.

Brown missed his third excellent chance of the match on 59 minutes when he fired over from ten yards out after Cavare volleyed in a cross from the right when meeting an excellent crossfield ball by Mowatt.

Moore brought down a long ball and held off a defender but his 20-yard shot was easily saved by Burge diving down to his left. Then Clarke-Harris fired wide after a scramble in the Barnsley box.

The goal came with ten minutes to play when a left-wing corner was headed on by Dominic Hyam and Junior Brown then captain Willis nodded in on the line.

Barnsley struggled to reply and had no real chances of an equaliser despite a succession of late corners.  Barnsley team: Davies; Cavare, Lindsay (McGeehan 83mins), Pinnock, Pinillos; Bahre (Moncur 65), Mowatt, Douglas, Thiam, Brown (Adeboyejo 72), Moore. Subs: Walton, Bird, Jackson, B Williams.

  • 14:12pm

They are third in League One and one of five unbeaten sides at the top of the table. The others are fifth-placed Walsall, who drew 1-1 at Oakwell a week ago, fourth-placed Sunderland, second-placed Portsmouth and leaders Peterborough United.
  • 14:16pm

Barnsley have not won at Coventry in 24 trips across 95 years. They won two of their first five matches at Highfield Road – all in the early 1920s – but, since a 3-2 success in 1923, they have drawn seven and lost 17 of their away games against Coventry.
  • 14:18pm
Assistant coach Andreas Winkler said: “I know that we haven’t had a win there in 95 years. It doesn’t mean that much to me because 1923 was a long time before I was born. But it would be nice to write a little bit of history and end that run.”
  • 14:19pm

Winkler added: “It is more important to me to stay unbeaten. I am looking forward to continuing this record for a long time. It has made the players more confident in the dressing room, you can feel it in every match.”
  • 14:20pm

Coventry’s manager is Mark Robins who was in charge of Barnsley for 92 games from September 2009 to May 2011, leading them to 18th and 17th in the Championship before quitting following a dispute with the board.
  • 14:29pm
His next job was with League One Coventry more than a year later but, after winning 17 of 33 games over five months, he moved back to Yorkshire with Championship Huddersfield. He was sacked by the Terriers after 18 months and next club Scunthorpe United after 15.
  • 14:31pm

He has come up against his former club Barnsley eight times since leaving Oakwell. The first reunion was the famous 2-2 final day draw in 2013 at the John Smith’s Stadium which kept both sides up. He also oversaw a 5-0 win the following season as well as two victories with Scunthorpe but has also been beaten by the Reds on four occasions.
  • 14:34pm

Robins was in charge of four Barnsley games against his current employers, winning two at Oakwell and losing twice at the Ricoh Arena by scorelines of 3-1 and 3-0.
  • 14:35pm

Robins has said in today’s programme: ‘Barnsley is a club that I managed for two years and I know how passionate their fans are, which will be displayed in the good numbers they bring today, and they will help to create a good atmosphere for the match.’
  • 14:37pm

The Reds’ last 12 visits to Coventry have brought just two points. Those points came from a 1-1 draw at the Ricoh Arena in 2009 after a controversial 94th-minute penalty for handball against Rob Kozluk, pictured, then a 2-2 draw in 2014 at City’s temporary home of Sixfields in Northampton with Conor Hourihane and Leroy Lita scoring first half equalisers.
  • 14:39pm
Reds centre-back Adam Jackson spent a month on loan to Coventry from Middlesbrough in late 2015 but never made an appearance when he was yet to play a senior game.
  • 14:41pm
Jackson left a few weeks before City beat Barnsley 4-3 at the Ricoh Arena thanks to goals from future Reds Adam Armstrong and Ryan Kent as well as England international Joe Cole, pictured scoring a stunning free-kick.
  • 14:43pm

The Reds were bottom of League One in December 2016 after 20 games, with Coventry top, but the Oakwell club caught up a deficit of 21 points on the Sky Blues who missed out on the play-offs which Barnsley won.
  • 14:45pm
The match which saw the two sides draw level on points was a 2-0 Barnsley win at Oakwell on March 1, 2016 with goals from Marc Roberts in the tenth minute and Ashley Fletcher, pictured, in the 60th.
  • 14:48pm

Coventry were then relegated to League Two the following season, with Robins taking charge of the final two months while winning the Checkatrade Trophy. But they returned to the third tier after one season, again winning at Wembley against Exeter City in the play-off final.
  • 14:49pm

Coventry have picked up eight points from their seven games so far this season. They followed a disappointing 1-0 home loss to Rochdale with a 2-1 success at Oxford United live on Sky Sports on Sunday, which lifted them out of the relegation zone up to 12th.
