A COVERT camera is being used in Barnsley town centre to target fly tipping and antisocial behaviour.

The camera is being used in a partnership between the council's community safety and town centre services teams to make the area a cleaner, safer place for people to visit and enjoy.

The council says the advantages of this type of camera over the fixed CCTV system in Barnsley is it can be deployed to various locations to target crime.

Town centre services and Barnsley's central safer neighbourhood area team have been trialling the camera in the town centre for six months.

Similar technology has been successfully used throughout the borough to address issues of antisocial behaviour as well as fly-tipping and environmental crime.

Cameras have also recently captured criminal damage offences, drugs related offences and antisocial behaviour in the central ward.
