AN ELDERLY road crash victim was taken to hospital by police after she had waited for more than an hour with no ambulance responding to a 999 call.

Good Samaritans did what they could to care for the 69-year-old pedestrian who fell to the ground and banged her head on the road surface following a collision with a car.

Patrick Holder called for an ambulance after realising the pensioner had been hurt in a collision with a car on Market Street at around 12.25pm on July 3.

That call was logged at 12.27pm but more than an hour later, a police officer who attended took the decision to carry the patient to hospital in his vehicle.

Jackie Cole, A and E Locality Director for South Yorkshire at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said: "We are sorry for any distress caused in relation to this incident and understand that a witness to the road traffic collision will be contacting the Trust directly to discuss their concerns about our response to the 999 call they made.

"We would like to reassure members of the public that our priority continues to be providing a safe, responsive and high quality service to the people of Yorkshire."
