BARNSLEY College celebrated World Mental Health Day by hosting a variety of events to help people who are suffering and to raise awareness about mental health issues.

The first event was a pet therapy session.

Students got the chance to hold and interact with tortoises, bearded dragons, snakes, guinea pigs and other animals.

Holding and interacting with pets and animals has been proven to reduce anxiety and stress and can help people who are suffering from mental illnesses.

At University Campus Barnsley a tea and talk event was held where both staff and students could go and have a chat with someone about their problems.

They were able to discuss their issues in private with someone from the mental health charity, Samaritans.

The hair and beauty department offered free hand and arm massages in the hope of providing stress relief for staff and students at the college, and the catering department made cookies and herbal tea and a member from Samaritans was available for people to speak to.
