Barnsley won 2-0 at League One Crewe Alexandra in their first pre-season match of the summer.

Mads Andersen put the visitors in front after four minutes then Conor Chaplin doubled the lead midway through the second half.

Gerhard Struber used two different teams in each half, both in the 3-4-1-2 formation while his side were always on top against the newly-promoted Alex who had not played in almost six months after the League Two season was cancelled in March.

The Reds began well and took the lead in the fourth minute, with Mads Andersen volleying in a right-wing Callum Styles corner at the near post.

Styles then took another corner from the other side and Jacob Brown volleyed just wide from a difficult position at the back post.

Patrick Schmidt should have made it 2-0 midway through the first half when he latched onto a pass by Alex Mowatt and was through one-on-one but smashed his powerful low shot off the base of the left post.

Crewe's only chance of the first half came when Jordan Williams lost the ball in his half and Luke Thomas had to make a last-ditch challenge in his box, then he needed treatment on his calf but completed the rest of the half.

Struber sprang a surprise in the second half by playing young strikers Victor Adeboyejo and George Miller as left and right wing-back respectively. They both had shots from outside the box before the hour-mark with Miller's effort deflected well wide then Adeboyejo's powerful effort was straight at the goalkeeper.

The second goal came on 71 minutes when Conor Chaplin netted a fine header from a left-wing cross by Clarke Oduor.

New signing Dominik Frieser played in Elliot Simoes on the left of the box but the powerful shot was straight at the goalkeeper who palmed it clear. Crewe had their first shot on target seconds later but Brad Collins pushed the powerful 20-yard strike away.

  • 15:04pm

Mads Andersen scores! Volley from a Styles corner
  • 15:05pm

A great start to the game for Barnsley. Callum Styles takes a corner from the left and Andersen gets in front of his man to turn in from five yards out at the near post.
  • 15:06pm

5 Jacob Brown was another corner. Styles takes from the left and Brown volleys wide at the back post, a difficult chance
  • 15:07pm

Barnsley really struggled to find an attacking set piece taker last season but, in the first five minutes here, Styles has put two fine deliveries in already - one from each side
  • 15:10pm

Barnsley totally dominating at the moment. You can tell they have just come off an intense end to the season whereas Crewe have not played since League Two ended in March
  • 15:12pm

The Reds have probably had 90 per cent possession in the first ten minutes. The likes of Woodrow, dropping deep from the number ten role, and Alex Mowatt are having lots of the ball and look very comfortable
  • 15:14pm

12 Schmidt looks to have gone through on goal but the referee gives a free-kick against him for handball as he blocked a clearance
  • 15:16pm

15 Crewe's first real attack ends in a cross from the right which is punched away by Jack Walton
  • 15:17pm

16 Crewe's first corner of the game is punched away again by Walton then they recycle the ball and Styles has to block for another corner. The hosts having their best spell so far
  • 15:18pm

17 The latest corner is easily caught by Walton
  • 15:20pm

Cauley Woodrow isn't having his best game so far, with a few wayward passes and poor touches.

22 Ludewig's cross from the right is touched by Woodrow but the goalkeeper scrambles to his right to gather as it is going wide anyway
  • 15:25pm

24 Big chance for 2-0. A ball from the left is missed by the home defence and Patrick Schmidt is through just inside the box but hits the base of the left post

  • 15:31pm

30 Now Luke Thomas smashes a shot over the bar from just outside the box
  • 15:33pm

31 The first thing Michael Sollbauer has really had to do is slide in perfectly to win a tackle on the right sideline. Then he high fives Mads Andersen on the way back into position. Lovely stuff.
  • 15:35pm

34 Ludewig makes a great tackle in his box but now is down injured
  • 15:36pm

That came about after Jordan Williams lost the ball deep in his half, his team-mate saved him but might have hurt himself in the process
  • 15:38pm

Ludewig is up and running well. Phew
  • 15:42pm

Not long until half-time now. The Reds will be pleased with his run-out but of course they would like to add another goal before these players are replaced at the break
  • 15:44pm

43 Andersen heads being for a corner on the right. It is over everyone and out. The hosts really haven't threatened at all
  • 15:46pm

HALF-TIME: Crewe 0, Barnsley 1. The Reds lead through Andersen's fourth-minute goal. They have had a couple of other chances whereas Crewe have had none. A good run-out for those 11 who will now be replaced. Wing-backs Ludewig and Styles probably caught the eye the most.
  • 16:04pm

SECOND HALF UNDER WAY. George Miller and Victor Adeboyejo are the wing-backs

Second half line up (3-4-1-2): Collins; Moon, Halme, Oduor; Miller, Wolfe, Ritzmaier, Adeboyejo; Simoes; Frieser, Chaplin.
