A 130-YEAR-OLD cricket club is set to hold a crisis meeting tonight amid fears that it will close.
Thurgoland CC plays in the Barnsley Sunday League but has lost several players for the 2019 season due to them moving out of the area or having a change of circumstance.
The meeting is due to take place from 7pm tonight at the ground on Cote Lane.
Kate Goddard, who helps to run the club, said: “The club has been going since 1888 and it must be one of the longest-running in the area. It would be such a shame for it to close but that will happen unless we get some more players for next season.
“Last season, my three sons, my daughter’s boyfriend and my husband all played and there are a few other families involved as well.
“It’s a nice atmosphere at the club and a great place to play cricket but we just don’t have the numbers.”
Kate, 58, who recently moved from Green Moor to Thorne End Road in Staincross, said the club needs some help off the pitch as well.
She said: “I have been helping out by mowing the grass and various other jobs but I have had Parkinson’s for 20 years and it is starting to catch up with me.
“Ideally we would get some new young players whose mums and dads would help out around the club.”
Thurgoland are looking for players of any gender aged 13 or over as well as volunteers.
