PROPOSED redundancies will leave a Barnsley primary school ‘seriously understaffed and unsafe’ according to trade unions.

A letter obtained by the Chronicle between trade unions and Oakhill Primary Academy’s executive head teacher Sam Bailey reveals a consultation is underway as the Ardsley school’s leadership tackles a severe financial deficit.

While the consultation is at an early stage and exact figures of the number of jobs expected to go have not been revealed, the letter highlights a proposed cut of a third to support staff, including the complete removal of teaching assistants from key stage two - pupils aged seven to 11.

The letter says staff are already overworked and teachers already have to cover breakfast and after school clubs as well as lunchtime supervision, and therefore already face long days and an unmanageable workload.
