THE FUNERAL of a 94-year-old veteran who took part in the D-Day landings will be held in Silkstone on Monday.

Denis Lockwood was chosen to carry a Bren gun across the beaches as a 20-year-old Private in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

He was shot in the leg during the operation, and spent two days on the beach before he was rescued.

His son Tim Lockwood said: “He spent a lot of time reminiscing about his war days.

“He was a likeable character, and even now there are people ringing from all over.”

Denis worked as a painter and decorator after completing his apprenticeship with the Co-op before the war.

He retired after a job helping young offenders to complete their community service, and he also had periods as a crane operator and lorry driver.

Denis was also a keen footballer and cricketer before the war.

Denis, who was born in Gawber, lived Martin Croft, Silkstone.

He divorced from his wife, and leaves Tim, 58, their only child.

A small service for close family and friends will take place at All Saints, Silkstone, at 11am on Monday.
