A YOUNG dad has been hailed a hero for pushing his son’s pram out of the path of an out-of-control van which was seconds away from ploughing into the sleeping toddler.

Aaron Lovitt’s quick-thinking actions likely saved his son’s life when they were caught up in a horrific road accident between two vehicles that left the father with serious injuries.

The 20-year-old had been pushing two-year-old son Leo in a pram on Pontefract Road when he was hit by the runaway van in Lundwood on Wednesday evening.

The silver van had been in a collision with a black BMW further down the road behind Aaron and when he turned to look - it was careering towards them.

He managed to swiftly push his son out of the way and took the full impact of the hit.

The van ended up on its side across part of the pavement and Aaron landed in a hedge, breaking his collarbone and puncturing a lung.

It is understood the occupant of the van fled the scene and the driver of the other car is thought to have suffered minor injuries.
