A TRIBUTE to one of the country’s most recognisable actors by a BAFTA-winning comedy writer and performer is coming to Barnsley.

Impressionist Julian Dutton stars as John Le Mesurier in the solo show ‘Do You Think That’s Wise? The Life and Times of John Le Mesurier’, which arrives at the Lamproom Theatre this summer after touring around the country.

The production is a celebration of the life of the actor, perhaps best known for his role as Sgt Arthur Wilson in Dad’s Army, but who also appeared in more than 100 films across a career spanning nearly half a century.

“He was an extraordinary man,” said Julian, who won a BAFTA for his work on BBC programme ‘Alistair McGowan’s Big Impression’.

“In addition to being a wonderful actor, he had this amazing resilience.

“He did have some troublesome times in his life. The break-up of his

marriage to Hattie Jacques, sadly. His best friend Tony Hancock having an affair with his second wife Joan.

“The show is a celebration of his career and his life. But of course if you do a one-man show about anyone, especially people involved in comedy, there are always downsides and shades to light.”

Julian wrote the show in 2018 and performed it at that year’s Edinburgh Fringe festival, beginning the current tour which will culminate in a run on the West End.

The show will come to the Lamproom Theatre on Friday, June 7.
