BARNSLEY MP Dan Jarvis has called on the government to do more to stop people dying throughout the winter because of the cold.

He secured a debate about the matter in the House of Commons on Monday to look at ways of avoiding people dying because of the cold, in which he said it was ‘not an easy problem to solve’ and that no one government is to blame.

He outlined where he thinks the government’s approach could be improved, and said a strategy to co-ordinate work across different government departments was needed.

Mr Jarvis told the Chronicle: “It was a good opportunity to raise a long-standing concern I have about winter deaths. I don’t think anyone should have to suffer and certainly not die as a result of the cold, but people are and it is avoidable.”
