BARNSLEY Central MP Dan Jarvis would be forced to quit Parliament if he wins the race to be Sheffield City Region mayor, Labour’s ruling body has said.

Dan previously said he would serve as both Mayor of South Yorkshire and MP for Barnsley Central on a two-year basis if he was elected, and would take no mayoral salary.

But the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee last night declared that MPs should not hold more than one full-time elected public office.

He is currently up against Sheffield’s Labour councillor Ben Curran in the race to select the party’s candidate at the mayoral election in May. The result is due to be announced on Friday.
