MP Dan Jarvis has ruled himself out of the running for the Labour leadership - despite strong public support and odds on him getting the job rocketing to 6/1.

Dan was touted as one of the favourites for the job - he was mentioned as a front-runner by David Dimbleby and the story was given local and national media coverage following Ed Miliband's resignation.

But he announced that he needed to prioritise his family over any political ambitions because 'his children come first'.

He said his eldest children had a tough time when their mother, his first wife Caroline, died in 2010 and he did not want them to lose their father.

He added: "My family are very important to me and, although I'm still keen to play a leading role in my party, this wasn't the right time to stand as leader."

Mr Jarvis, a former paratrooper, gave up his military career to become an MP in 2011.
