A DARFIELD woman saved the life of a young girl while on holiday in Malta.

Shelley McCuskey, from Bly Road, was staying at the San Pawl Hotel, in San Pawl Il-Bahar with her family.

Shelley, who has previously trained as a nurse, was in the hotel swimming pool when she realised a little girl was in trouble.

She said: “I was in the pool with my grandchildren McKenzie, Georgia and Elliott, along with their parents. I made my way towards the shallow end to get out and felt something brush against my ankle.

“When I looked down I saw the little girl - she was five years old - lying on the bottom of the pool. She was unconscious.

“I got her out, put her in the recovery position and pushed on her lungs to expel the water. She had inhaled quite a lot. The paramedics arrived shortly afterwards and took her to Meter Dei hospital.

“Her mum got back from the hospital about 8.30pm, she was in tears and thanked me profusely.”
