Southampton are happy with winger Lloyd Isgrove's progress on loan at Barnsley, says their goalkeeper coach Dave Watson.

Isgrove, 23, has played 15 times for the Reds during the loan spell which has now been extended until the end of the season. Watson told the Chronicle: "Lloyd is a good young talent but it is a big ask to play Premier League football straight away so it's good to get exposure in League One.

"We want to send players where we believe there is a good culture like Barnsley.  It has been a good fit for Lloyd, Southampton and Barnsley."

Watson also knows goalkeeper Nick Townsend from his time as goalkeeper coach at Birmingham and believes he and fellow young stopper Adam Davies battling each other for the number one spot is a good idea.

"Nick Townsend was a highly-rated youngster at Birmingham when I was there.  It obviously didn't quite work out for him there but Barnsley is a fantastic club to be at as I know well.

"He will be pushing to be number one. To have two young lads fighting for it means they will always be hungry and giving everything."
