Goalkeeper Adam Davies is desperate to keep Barnsley's first clean sheet in 17 games.

The Reds have not avoided conceding since the 2-0 win over Gillingham in September while Davies has not kept the opposition out since the goalless draw with Bradford in August.

"I thought I was going to get a clean sheet on Saturday at Colchester when we were cruising at 3-0," Davies told the Chronicle. "But we let two sloppy goals in and we need to work on that because we don't want to have to rely on our forward players scoring three goals in every game.

"The most important thing is that we won but there have been a lot of mistakes this season, not just from the goalkeepers but from the outfield players as well.  We are working hard on the training pitch and hopefully that clean sheet will come against Wigan on Saturday."

Davies, 23, is competing with Nick Townsend, 21, for a place between the sticks. Townsend was given a run of starts ahead of Davies earlier in the season but made several errors and was dropped. Davies defended his team-mate, saying: "Nick is a really good goalkeeper.  I felt he did really well when he played. We're both still learning and it's a good battle between us.

"I went through a bit of what Nick is going through when I first came in and made few mistakes. It's hard because fans obviously want the team to win but sometimes they don't realise that we are young goalkeepers who are just starting out and trying to learn. It's been tough for Nick but I've tried to be there for him because I was in the same boat last season."

Towsend replaced the experienced Ross Turnbull as Davies' fellow goalkeeper. He said: "It is a bit different being the older goalkeeper. I like the pressure that brings and I am trying to help the other 'keepers.  It's been stop-start for me this season with a few groin injuries.

"But I feel like now I am getting back to where I was last season. This has been the toughest test I have had so far but I feel I am coming through it a bit now."

Davies was the penalty shoot-out hero two weeks ago in Barnsley's Johnstone's Paint Trophy win at Wigan, who visit Oakwell tomorrow, keeping out a spot-kick by ex-Red David Perkins.

"It was a terrible penalty and I could have thrown my hat on it. It's always nice to win on penalties and be the hero.  We know we can beat Wigan, even though it was on penalties. We had a lot more shots than them and played well.

"We just need to do the same again and get the win. We're turning a corner and we're in a good place. Even before the last few wins we were playing well and I could feel that we were going to go on a run.  We have been working very hard and we just need to keep it going."
