Barnsley reached the Wembley final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy after a penalty shoot-out win at Fleetwood Town in the Northern Area final onThursday.

Adam Hammill scored the winning spot-kick after Adam Davies saved two in the shoot-out. Conor Hourihane's strike midway through the second half had been cancelled out by an Aidy White own goal as the match finished 1-1. The Reds will now take on League Two Oxford at Wembley on April 3.

Hammill and White were surprise inclusions in the side after injury and they replaced George Williams and Ashley Fletcher. Barnsley were denied a clear penalty in the 17th minute when Sam Winnall was dragged down by Nathan Pond, who should have been sent off but nothing was given.

Winnall, Alfie Mawson and Hourihane all missed decent headed chances while Josh Brownhill had a 30-yard shot clawed out of the top corner.

Fleetwood's only chance of the first half fell to Jamille Matt who could not beat Davies from close range after an error by Mawson.

Winnall and Hammill both came close in the second half before Hourihane fired in from 15 yards on 67 minutes out after Pond lost the ball deep in his half.

But Fleetwood levelled with nine to play when James Bree gave the ball away and Ashley Hunter finished well from a David Ball pass. The final touch came off White and was given as an own goal.

Mawson saved off the line in injury-time then Fletcher inexplicably missed a perfect headed chance so the match went ot penalties.

Kevin Long and Hourihane netted their spot-kicks as did the first two Fleetwood players so it was 2-2 after four. Josh Scowen had been brought on for penalties but saw his saved by Chris Maxwell only for Davies to rescue him with two excellent saves either side of Winnall's successful spot-kick. Hammill then fired in off the bar to send the Reds to Wembley.
