Barnsley must forget about what happened at the John Smith's Stadium last season when they face Huddersfield Town today says midfielder Stephen Dawson.
The Reds and the Terriers both stayed up on the final day of the campaign last May after a 2-2 draw which sparked jubilant scenes at the final whistle with the two sets of fans chanting together.
The result completed a remarkable survival for Barnsley who were seven points adrift of safety in January. They now find themselves second bottom and in another scrap against the drop but Dawson says there is no room for nostalgia ahead of a game in which victory could pull Barnsley out of the bottom three for the first time since August.
"Last year has gone and we can't think about it," 28-year-old Irishman Dawson told the Chronicle.
"We can go on about how many games we won in a short space of time and what happened on the last day but it doesn't affect this season. We are just thinking about our last game (a 1-0 win over Millwall on Saturday) and looking to build on it and go on another good run."
Defeat to Millwall would have left the Reds seven points adrift of safety with 15 games to go but the victory means the gap is two points with the sides outside the bottom three having played more games than Barnsley. Dawson said: "The fans, the manager and the players needed that win.
"It's hard coming in on a Monday near the bottom of the table after another bad performance. We haven't been good enough individually and as a group so far this season. Everything we have tried just hasn't worked. But we've still got 15 games left and a lot of points to play for.
"Everyone is relieved after the Millwall match. We all knew that it was an important game and that the win would drag them back into it. If you look at the bottom three clubs, they all won on Saturday and it drags a few clubs in that probably thought a couple of weeks ago that they were nowhere near it. Now they are looking over their shoulders.
"Probably an awful lot of people outside of Barnsley wrote us off, along with Yeovil, and that can work to our advantage. It's not an option to go down. We're all disappointed in the position that we are in again but we have to remain positive otherwise what is the point in turning up?
"It's going to be a hard run-in with a lot of tough games but hopefully we can get a bit of a run together now. "We're still in a lot of trouble but we can build on that win."
