A dedicated volunteer who has been with the St John Ambulance Service for 37 years has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.

Andrew Feely, of Oakwood Close, Worsbrough Dale, has been nominated as Volunteer of the Year by his father Derek and sister Delia.

He also received a glowing tribute from Wayne Bullimore, chief executive of Barnsley Football Club's Community Sports and Education Trust.

Mr Bullimore said Andrew - who is a full-time paramedic - had worked "really hard" on an education scheme the trust ran for disadvantaged children. He had delivered "excellent" first aid sessions to the group and also had the vision to spearhead a new first aid unit, the Oakwell unit, at the Barnsley stadium.

Andrew, area superintendent for St John's covering the south, west and north of Yorkshire, has already been invested in the prestigious Order of St John for his exceptional long service.

His sister Delia said it had always been Andrew's dream to become a paramedic as well as working for St John's.

She said: "I am extremely proud of what he has achieved. He has worked tirelessly to get to where he is now."
