STAFF at Barnsley Hospital from surgeons to cleaners have been praised by a 74-year-old man for the second to none care he received while having a pacemaker fitted.

Brian Harrison of Windmill Avenue, Grimethorpe, was taken to Barnsley Hospital after collapsing at home in June. A paramedic arrived after his wife dialled 999 and Brian was taken in to the resuscitation unit before being taken on to the coronary care ward.

He said the paramedic spent a long time stabilising him, travelled with him in the ambulance and took him into the resuscitation unit.

He said: “Doctors and nurses were introducing themselves by their first names, which I thought was fantastic because usually they want to be called doctor. I have never known that before.

“On the ward, the nursing care was beyond compare. You can’t get any better. The cleaning staff came round and chatted, the staff who brought the meals were brilliant nothing was too much trouble for them.

The surgeons explained things in details you could understand, and said anything you want to ask please ask any time at all.

“If we can award stars it’s five all the way.”

Brian said during one of the nights in hospital, he suffered 11 ‘episodes’ including one where his heart stopped for seven seconds. It was decided he needed the pacemaker.

Brian was in hospital for nine nights and ten days and is now on the road to recovery. He still can’t use his right arm properly following the procedure.

“I’m still healing. I can’t use my arm, but I’m on the road to recovery in that respect.”
