JORDAN Williams is delighted that his first run of starts for Barnsley coincided with their final push to get promotion from League One.
The 19-year-old right-back had started just one league match before last month but found himself in the starting line-up for the last five, including a four-game winning run which secured promotion with a game to spare.
He told the Chronicle: “I have really enjoyed it. It took a long time to get into the team but to be in the side when for the promotion and the celebrations is just amazing to be honest.
“At the start of the year the manager said I wasn’t ready but for me to play at the end of the year shows he’s given me a chance and I have taken it.
“I am improving every game and learning every game. There’s still a lot to come from me but for me to have this experience of playing the last five games of a promotion season and helping the team over the line is a massive start for me.”
Williams is now looking forward to testing himself in the second tier, and hopes he will play against him hometown club Huddersfield Town who sold him to Barnsley last August.
“I have never played in the Championship before and I am definitely looking forward to it. Hopefully I will play against Huddersfield and hopefully we will win.
“I came through the academy there and I am a Huddersfield boy. I will be looking for that game when the fixtures come out.”
Last season, Williams was on loan from Huddersfield at Bury who were relegated from League One.
“The scenes from this year to last year are totally different. The fans were slating us last year but this year everyone is buzzing and it’s credit to everyone at the club.
“The celebrations have been excellent. The fans have been amazing and they have got us where we are so to give something back to them has been excellent.”
