DRIVERS are being warned of delays at one of the busiest intersections heading into Barnsley town centre.

Starting on Monday, work will be carried out at Townend roundabout to replace buried water mains.

Yorkshire Water and engineering partners Balfour Beatty, will be working to replace 230 metres of main which currently runs through the middle of the roundabout, and have been made inaccessible by years of construction above and around it.

To maintain access to the roundabout and minimise the impact on road users, the new water mains will be laid around the edge of the roundabout and in the adjoining grass verges between Dodworth Road, Summer Lane, Shambles Street and Peel Street.

There will be lane and road closures on each of the entrance and exit roads to the roundabout.

Closures will be kept to one exit or entrance at a time and diversions will be in place. The improvement works are expected to be completed early in October.
