FORMER cricket umpire Dickie Bird has made a second huge contribution to Barnsley Hospital’s Tiny Hearts appeal, pushing the total raised over the £500,000 half way point.

Dickie has donated £35,000, following on from his first donation for the same amount in March last year.

The appeal aims to raise £1m for a new special care baby unit, and his donation is a giant step forward in reaching the target.

Dickie said: “Barnsley is my home town and the appeal is raising money for a tremendous cause for the people here. I have visited the ward and seen for myself the great work of the staff caring for the premature babies and I felt very humbled it brought a lump in my throat and a tear to my eye.”
