BARNSLEY’S Dickie Bird was given a standing ovation as he proudly picked up his latest honour.

Dickie brought the house down as he took to the stage in his cap and gown to receive an honorary fellowship of Bradford College.

Dickie has previously been handed honorary doctorate degrees at Sheffield Hallam University, Huddersfield University and Leeds University.

Not bad for a bloke who left Raley Secondary Modern School in 1948, aged 15 with little in the way of qualifications.

Dickie went on to play cricket for Yorkshire and then Leicestershire and upon retirement became the most famous umpire in the world.
